The new year is upon us, which means new year’s resolutions, goals, and trends. 2018 saw the rise in the need for social media and small businesses, and this year is no different. With social media always changing, sometimes it’s difficult to keep up with these ever-so-trendy changes. So, let’s look at 5 top social media trends that are expected to grow and take on bigger roles.
5 Social Media Trends for 2019
Rebuilding Trust. Everyone’s always talking about “gaining the trust of your customers”, and it’s even more important via social media. 2018 saw quite a few social media scandals, including the big Facebook Cambridge fiasco. As a result, all social media platforms have cracked down on fake accounts, transparency, and security. All of these mistrusts have a direct effect on businesses who use social media as a marketing platform. Brands must rely on genuine and intimate content to keep the trust between them and their followers.
Micro-Influencers. Last year was definitely the year of influencers, and that won’t change at all this year. What will change is the type of influencers businesses will start using. Instead of relying on mega-influencers with millions of followers and cost a fortune, brands will begin looking at micro-influencers. Those who have less than 10,000 followers, but are experts in their niche. Oh, and they don’t cost, and arm and a leg either.
Stories. Stories hit the social media scene with a bang and just keep on growing. Hootsuite reports that 64% of respondents have either implemented Instagram Stories into their social strategy or plan to in the upcoming year. Facebook’s chief officer shared that Stories are set to surpass feeds as the primary way to share. If you haven’t started adding Stories to your social media strategy, 2019 is the time!
Video. It’s no surprise that video, once again, makes the list. Video continues and will continue in the future, to be the dominant medium in social media. Youtube continues to rise in popularity as Gen Z’ers are the “video generation”. As they sing, ‘Video killed the radio star’.
Social Listening. We wrap up our list with a newbie, social listening. If you’re not quite aware of what it is, don’t be alarmed. It’s just started to gain momentum in the social media world - and for good measure. Social listening is kind of like stalking, but for marketing purposes. It’s literally scouring the web for all mentions of a brand, good and bad. It’s power is in lead generation and social selling. There are even social listening tools to help you get started.
