Why I Love What I Do

Dec 09, 2017Nick Hatia , EMD Sr. Manager

I’ll admit it - I love diamonds - and I always will! My passion for the diamond industry goes way back, farther than I’d like to admit. :)

My family has been in the diamond and jewelry business for close to 30 years now. So needless to say, I have been around diamonds for a long time! I honestly can’t remember a time when I haven’t been passionate about diamonds.

Rewinding back a couple years, I graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelors of Science in Finance. This gave me the foundation I needed to jump into the diamond world on my own, outside of the family business.

I have held various positions in our industry, such as managing a family-friends jewelry retail store in New Jersey, a production manager for a bridal jewelry brand as well as doing jewelry and loose diamond sales in both bridal and engagement sectors. All my past experiences: 6 years in retail jewelry, 4 years in bridal jewelry and now 6 years managing in loose diamonds has helped me better understand the retailer's needs as well as the final customer’s point of view.

I’ve learned so much over the years, and have gathered valuable insight along the way. Here are 3 nuggets to give you a glimpse into who I am and what I believe in:

  • I really believe in and support the local, small businesses - the brick & mortar. These are the foundations of our country, and I will fight hard to protect them. If you are interested in helping the cause, check out Small Business Saturday - a community I’m passionate about!

  • I don’t like online retailers too much. Growing up in a family that owned a small family business, I can understand how much online retail can hurt a family business.

  • I still believe in the romance that surrounds buying a diamond. I get upset about how online retail takes away from the romance in purchasing a diamond from a store. When making one of the most important purchases of your life, I feel you should sit with an experienced jeweler, let the person educate you and help you find the perfect stone for that perfect someone.

Looking back at the past 14 years of experience in the jewelry and diamond industry, I can say it has been a wonderful journey. Each piece of the puzzle has fit perfectly in preparing me for my current managing position, here at EMD. I love working closely with the sales team, creating the tools to support our customers and seeing the fruits of our labors come to fruition - and I’m excited about what the future will bring!
